I had to get a part time job where I worked after school and on weekends to pay for both insurance and gas. But I did get a cheap car (this was in the mid 1980s and my car was a 69 Thunderbird from my grandmother).
But luckily I didn’t have to have my parents with me after licensing. I did have to have them during my learner’s permit era.
