The problem (yeah, like there’s just one!) with Gasoline Alley is that its cast is multi-generational. Walt is a WWI vet, his adopted son Skeezix (who calls Walt “uncle”, for some reason) is a WWII vet, and Skeezix’s son Chip (the physician’s assistant) was an Army medic during the Vietnam war. I suppose Scancarelli could change things by moving Walt to WWII, Skeezix to Vietnam, and Chip to the Gulf War, but that handles only one small part of the family. After all, Chip has his own kids, which would be OK , except that you also have to age down Walt’s adopted daughter, Judy, and her kid, along with Walt’s biological son, Corky (who runs the diner where Baleen works) and his three kids, at least one of whom has a kid of his own. Then there’s Skeezix’s daughter Clovia, who has inherited the titular garage, and who with Slim Skinner are parents of a daughter and an adopted son, Rover, who in turn is the father of Boog and Aubie. But this is only scratching the surface, since the family tree contains many more offspring (who, thank goodness, seldom appear in the strip nowadays) and all their spouses (and their in-laws, such as Slim’s mother, who does appear), so there are so many characters over 5 generations who would have to be updated that it’s probably not worth the effort. It’s best just to assume that Walt is the world’s actual last WWI vet, all the newspaper records to the contrary, and let it go at that. After all, the oldest characters in the strip other than Walt have canonically died off, so it’s possible that on one of his periodic visits to the Old Cartoon Characters’ home Walt will decide that he likes it there so much that he decides to stay. Then he could remain a part of the strip, since Skeezix would go there to visit him from time to time, but not longer be really “alive”. (The exceptions to having the oldest characters die off are Rufus and Joel, who will live forever, like the cockroaches that"
