Making it harder to get into the US obviously doesn’t work, even the spectre of separation from one’s children was not enough to deter the desperate people trying to escape intolerable conditions. If something isn’t done about that, the wall will simply create chaos right on the other side of that border and stick Mexico with people they can even less afford to handle than we can.
The problem is the wealthy world hasn’t done enough to help the poorest people and this creates the situation at the borders of the USA and Europe. It allows despots like Putin to claim that they can make their countries better by forcefully taking another country’s wealth. If people have nothing to lose, then they will attempt anything. The same problem is occurring within the wealthy countries where a small number control most of the wealth, they are actually putting themselves at risk of theft and violence.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers say Haley’s story is typical; the vast majority of illicit fentanyl — close to 90% — is seized at official border crossings. Immigration authorities say nearly all of that is smuggled by people who are legally authorized to cross the border, and more than half by U.S. citizens like Haley. Virtually none is seized from migrants seeking asylum. -
There is no easy answer. Never has been. A lot of the polo barns in the 80’s, and likely before and after, let’s just say when the police stopped by on routine business, most of the barn workers would disappear.
Would certainly help, if Repubs wouldn’t vote against reasonable immigration policies and more recently they voted against providing more border patrols on the border. Really, hard to take Repubs seriously on immigration, when they aren’t serious and seem to mostly want to commit crimes against humanity.
