Qatar Laws Regarding Alcohol Drinking alcohol in public or being found drunk is illegal and can attract heavy fines and even jail terms. Public drinking, for example, may result in a prison sentence and/or a fine of up to QAR 3,000 (USD 825).

Legality of drinking in Qatar is not the issue here. Drinking is allowed in Qatar’s high end hotels and restaurants. The problem is that Budweiser shells out about $75 million every four years as the World Cup’s sponsor and had a signed agreement with Qatar to allow their beer to be sold in the sports stadiums. Qatar reneged on the deal costing Budweiser additional millions and leaving them stuck with a huge refrigerated warehouse stacked to the ceiling with their product. This is the first time an islamic nation has hosted the WC and it should be the last.
