    An echelon is an echelon.   Note that the bird at the intersection of the two echelons is drafting two birds, while the other birds are drafting only one, and the each of the two birds in front is pulling the entire echelon behind it.   This is why V formations are constantly shifting:   The bird in front gets tired and is replaced by a fresh bird.

    They may have inverted the V so that an injured bird could keep up.
