The problem is that the the ever rising extremism is being generously funded by would be autocrats. If they can pollute the public discourse to the stage where reasoned debate leading to agreement becomes impossible, then the stage is set for strong-man rule by decree to be the only defence against chaos.

Of course the newly installed strong man will always ensure that there is plenty of chaos (real or confected) to justify his continued rule.

Meanwhile the average voter is going the other way.
