You probably will learn even less from the Summer School version of History class. Summer School classes are not usually nearly as thorough as they are during the regular school term.

For starters, yes…

I always taught my students that this is a very loaded quote. It’s almost always after the “event” that the “lesson” is clear. While an event is transpiring, it’s simply looking for patterns, which may or may not be accurate. For instance, during the 1930s, with the horror of the Great War still fresh in minds/sight(amputees everywhere), “history’s lesson” was avoid war, yet we see the events related to Hitler’s conquering w/o firing a shot as a lesson to “always stand up to an aggressor”.

That’s why historians say history does not “start” until 10 years have passed. Sometimes a longer period is needed. The perspective of time is required.
