Biden decries Trump backers’ ‘dagger at throat’ of democracy
President Joe Biden accused Donald Trump and his supporters of holding a “dagger at the throat of democracy” in a forceful speech Thursday marking the anniversary of the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. He warned that though it didn’t succeed, the insurrection remains a serious threat to America’s system of government.
Biden’s criticism was blistering of the defeated president whom he blamed for the assault that has fundamentally changed Congress and the nation, and raised global concerns about the future of American democracy.
“For the first time in our history, a president not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob breached the Capitol,” Biden said. “You can’t love your country only when you win."
His voice booming at times, filling the ornate Statuary Hall where rioters had laid siege, the president called on Americans to remember what they saw Jan. 6 with their own eyes: the mob attacking police, breaking windows, a Confederate flag inside the Capitol, gallows erected outside threatening to hang the vice president — all while Trump sat at the White House watching it on TV.
“The former president’s supporters are trying to rewrite history. They want you to see Election Day as the day of insurrection and the riot that took place here on January 6 as a true expression of the will of the people. Can you think of a more twisted way to look at this country, to look at America? I cannot.”
“We must be absolutely clear about what is true and what is a lie,” Biden said. “The former president of the United States of America has spread a web of lies about the 2020 election.”
He said: “We are in a battle for the soul of America.”

A mostly peaceful protest ? One networks protest is another’s riot. American MSM botched this months prior to 1/6/21 riot. Telling the truth showing the truth is the medias job, inserting themself into the story not so much. If I trusted MSM to speak truth it was lost during the Summer of Love riots 2020. The attack on the Capital should have been squashed. Pearl Harbor shouldn’t have been bombed. The Towers shouldn’t have been hit. America needs to be moved to action…
I watched on TV as the nasty Trump moneys beat cops and scale the wall of the Capitol while pulling down the American flag and putting up the traitor Trump flag.and break windows as they wandered in a stupefied idiot Maga daze with their confederate flag and hang mans noose. And that nightmare went on for 3 hours.
For people like “Montana Bill”, the further away from 1/6/21 we get the more the Insurrection at our Capitol becomes a “non-event”.
And “Bill’s” reaction is totally “rational” compared to some on the Right.
I grew up in the South, constantly hearing about “The War of Northern Aggression” and how the poor, old South just wanted to go about their business, undisturbed, while the bad, old North keep prodding and pushing and aggravating the situation until the South was forced – yes, forced to attack Fort Sumter out of self-defense.
That’s the kind of revisionist history the aggrieved comes up with to justify their positions, and the republicans are at it again. Twisting or ignoring any fact that doesn’t “fit” their narrative!
Recently, Senator Raphael Ted Cruz spoke heresy on the floor on the Senate (by which I mean, he spoke the truth!) Fortunately, one of the Guardians of the “Big Lie”, Tucker Carlson, was able to quickly and publicly shame the Senator into retracting his truthful senate floor statement and, instead, allow him to mumble a reiteration of the Big Lie that the 1/6 Insurrectionists were merely misunderstood “patriots” who knocked around a couple of capital police – probably by mistake.
Unfortunately, Trump was prescient when he questioned, at one of his rallies, “Who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?”
