My daughter got caught lying to me a couple of times when she was young. First time I told her it was wrong and warned her there would be punishment the next time. Second time she got punished and warned it would double next time. The next time was the last time after she found out I was serious. I didn’t just punish her though, I also explained why what she was lying about was both wrong and unsafe, and if she did wrong as an adult there would be far more serious consequences. She then understood that I was giving her a life lesson on being responsible for her actions, and we had far less trouble with her as a teenager than most parents did with their kids. Learning that early on has helped her a great deal in her adult life.
