Back then the Repubs were against any sort of military build up, Roosevelt had to do most of it under the table. And today they are again on the wrong side of the issue, wanting a military 10 times the size of anyone else, and they are always hoping for a conflict.
Today’s tRump led Republicans would vote against a Declaration of War claiming the Japanese were just tourists. Then tRump would surrender Hawaii to Hirohito.
Last night I saw a rerun of the Johnny Carson show dated December 7, 1989. In Johnny’s opening monologue he joked about then President Bush’s reaction to the attack might have been. He mimicked Bush portraying him as wishy-washy, ‘are we sure?’ etc.
Interestingly enough, when I was growing up, I was told the attack was “totally unprovoked” with absolutely no mention of the fact that we were actively supporting the oil blockade of Japanese ports because of their invasion of China.
I guess that “totally unprovoked” had a different meaning than it had in the 1950s.

I was just thinking about how we remembered Pearl Harbor today when I was young. What a difference.

you forgot to include the rationing and other rules put in place. People today, would not follow any of that because they need their freedums

This reminds me of how Trump would ask during his security briefings why what they were talking about wasn’t being talked about on the news.
