All those minds and money, and they could have just asked “Andy Capp.”

Another great idea from the crew with too much time and money and nothing better to do.

I hope the debris don’t change course and smack us.

DART = Double asteroid redirection test. It will target the twin asteroids known as Didymos to determine if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course. While no known asteroid larger than 140 meters in size including Didymos has any significant chance to impact Earth for the next 100 years, experts estimate that we only know about 40 percent of asteroids in the solar system. It’s the other 60% we need to be concerned about.

Just curious, if any physicists are out there, how large an object would be needed to smash the Earth into jellybean sized gobs? Assuming a velocity of 8,000 m/sec.

For the first time in Earth’s history it has a species capable of defending it from an extinction level asteroid impact.
