    It’s sort of universal. People presume that kids with any superficial similarity will automatically be friends. Both being from America OR black would be enough all by itself. In mixed age groups, being the same age would be enough to trigger that assumption.

    There’s some truth in it, too. Shared interests and shared backgrounds do bring people together. My daughter has some disabilities, and it’s surprising how often her friends have the same issues.

    The vast majority of white Americans have no idea what it takes to live in a culture and society that defines you the “other than normal”, for reasons beyond your control.

    Most white Americans have not lived outside of the state they were born in.
