    But that’s when I started buying merchandise for my stores and trying to guess which would be the hot item in the coming Christmas season. July and August we the slower months for retail sales in my stores, a time to plan.

    I wonder how many tons of imported perishables will go to waste.

    If you have a supply chain that

    :: has very little slack built in

    :: is very long

    :: and has intricate dependencies on all its parts

    Then, you should have expected this. Which some of us did, but “you” weren’t listening because “expense” (and “head in sand syndrome”). Even with good planning, though, you simply cannot expect a system as complex as our economy to shrug off a hit as massive as the pandemic. With the “planning” that was in place it is, of course, even less likely that things will recover easily.

    Most militaries are defeated because of their supply lines getting too long. Look at Hitler and Napoleon and Russia. The same is true for businesses, think how long it would take to get a replacement if the ship sank.

    I remember when “Christmas in July” was a signal for crafters to get moving on HOME MADE and LOCAL craft projects.
