China will wait until the USA it tied up with North Korea, Iran or some other “minor” shooting war and invade while we don’t have the resources to protect Taiwan. They believe in the long game.
The only worry is that their current great leader wants it done before he dies in office.
On the other hand, China does need to worry about the South China Sea, most of their trade and almost all of their imported oil goes through there. A naval blockade would cripple the Chinese economy.
Though they would do better to make friends with their neighbors and police the area together than build island forts that would last a week or less without a large ocean going navy to support, supply and defend them. Having friendly neighbors is a better policy.
