Been doing that for almost a year with my removable braces. Supposed to apply a new form every two weeks. I manage three weeks on occasion. And even one, once. But… They work!
The question remains, did Ruthie wrongly think it was this week or did her friend wrongly think it was next week? Or did her friend remember too late for this week and decide to save face by changing the date? The timing of the call is a little suspicious. (Some people hate apologizing.)

Reminds me of my old mother who was 91 when she passed away and had dementia for a several years before then.
