The Olympics has traditionally cost a city considerably more to put on than it ever gets back in measurable cash anyway. But this one is… almost certainly going to be worse.
Tokyo currently has an average of 10 cases a day per 100,000 residents. It’s a crisis compared with the Japan national average of 3 per 100k. Japan has recently been vaccinating at breakneck speed, and has achieved more than 50% of the US rate in the past 2-3 months.
My county, a blue city in a red state, which is moderately well vaccinated 61% of 12+, 81% of 65+), has 14d average 9.7/100k cases, up from 0.5 per 100k 3 weeks ago. Source: NYT’s excellent daily statistics on US & Worldwide cases/deaths/vaccination rates (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html) worth my cost of subscription alone.
Let’s look at reality. We humans have brains — use them. This is not the Black Plague when we knew virtually nothing about disease. Louis Pasteur’s 200th birthday is the end of next year.
I remember seeing “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (released in 1956) in the movies when I was a boy. That version inserted new footage with Raymond Burr (before he became Perry Mason) edited together with the original Japanese film of 1954 and dubbed everything (rather poorly, actually) into English. And of course, I followed the franchise for some years thereafter. And I always felt sorry for and wondered how and why Tokyo rebuilt, only to be stomped flat again. But at least you could see Godzilla coming and make a run for it.

This movie clip sums up the Tokyo IOC’s handling of the situation pretty well, doesn’t it?

Godzilla’s even smart enough to stay home and stay away from Covid19 hotspots.

Tokyo didn’t deserve this. Little Rock, probably.
