I absolutely hated the “back to school” ads on TV when I was in school, especially elementary school (early 1960’s), so I cringe even now because of that. I didn’t like being reminded, and it didn’t help that the ads started a good month before school started (the first day of school was always the day after Labor Day). Most ads featured happy, smiling children, which I never understood. I think the one that bothered me the most was “First to Sears, then to school!”.

I believe it was Staples that would run ads with the song “Its the most wonderful time of the year” for back to school…
