I’ve had a couple of epiphanies — the first was about race when my best buddy in the Marine Corps turned out to be black and I didn’t realize it until my soon to be bride said he couldn’t be my best man at our wedding. That still makes me feel sick inside. The second was about gays and lesbians. I have two beloved grandchildren who turned out gay and lesbian. Made me get real. The sickness was in my head, not in my heart. Got that straight. No pun intended.
The MAGA crowd just don’t understand that we were never GREAT. We’ve always had our flaws, some were just swept under the rug faster than others. We need to strive to be great SOMEDAY!
We need to face our past in order to not make the same mistakes. Denying what happened doesn’t make it go away. We should strive to do and be better than before.
As an American Aborigine, I can attest to the fact that it wasn’t only “black” history that was short-changed in American schools…
All minorities get short shrift in American history – ALL OF THEM!
If you don’t believe THAT, google “Nits make lice” and read what pops up.
Incidentally, I DO know that the term “aborigine” is frowned upon because, as a noun, it tends to ‘dehumanize’, but, on the other hand – I am NOT an Indian – I’ve never been within a thousand miles of either Mumbai or Delhi!
They say those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. Critical race theory will probably bring up some points that are very uncomfortable for me, but if there’s something I can learn from it so that I treat people better NOW, then I’m for it.
The very people who decry “cancel” culture actually love to cancel things. I’d call it hypocrisy, but it seems more accurate to call it a core personality trait.
It appears that the GQP has now declared racial differences “over” (after all the Supreme Court said that we don’t need to school the southern states about equality anymore)… and so when the Democrats talk about (gasp) reparations or (arrgh) race-based assistance… THEY are the ones in the wrong. Typical “reverso” BS.
Like so many things, the radical right latches onto some term or slogan without any idea what it is and turns it into a crisis, driving their people into hysteria. They do it in part to keep their people outraged ALL. THE. TIME. But they also do it so we don’t talk at all about the ideas behind those terms or slogans. Critical Race Theory is one of those. It is a term developed in law schools for abstract legal arguments. It is not taught in schools, though some of its principles — like teaching actual history including the bad stuff with regard to race, like using primary sources so we can see they systemic nature of racism for ourselves. They just don’t want us to talk about race. Perfect example was the recent 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Oklahoma just past a law making it difficult to even bring it up as a class topic because it could make students feel uncomfortable or guilty.
Or the whole slavery question itself. Primary sources like most of the Confederate articles of secession state plainly that slavery was precisely the reason for leaving the union. As for voter suppression, primary sources from the right speak plainly about how important it is to disenfranchise the black voter. Opponents to “Critical Race Theory” don’t want (as they claim) to protect children from “indoctrination” — they want to continue their own indoctrination.

For many, yes, but then you have the right-wing populist, Make Sierra Up Gang, and they are all around me.
