The thing I find interesting is they hoped it would hit water and not land, because of obvious reasons. I still have to wonder how sailors feel about that?
Just one more incident to add to the list of space related unplanned incidents by a First World country. From US to Russia to India to China…humanity isn’t perfect with planning worse case scenarios.
You can thank Bill Clinton for the relative success of the CCP’s space and missile program. Prior to Clinton China had major problems in staging their rockets and missiles. They could successfully launch, but when it came to transitioning from the first to the second stage it usually ended in failure. When the second stage was successful, the third stage usually failed. The CEO of Loral who was good buddies with Clinton had major dealings with China and wanted to use the cheap Chinese launchers to put their satellites in orbit rather than the expensive US rockets. Problem was the State Department controlled transfer of rocket staging technology and nixed any such transfer to China. Loral CEO Schwartz contributed $1.5 million to the Democrat Party for Clinton’s reelection which resulted in Bill transferring authority over rocket technology to the Commerce Department who promptly approved Loral to transfer said technology to China. China was not only able to cure their rocker staging problems but applied it to their ICBM program. Yup, all those CCP ICBMs aimed at the USA is courtesy of Bill Clinton and the Democrats. Of Course the CCP trickled this tech down to North Korea. Just do a quick search on “Clinton Loral China” and you’ll come up with a ton of references.

What it had was a LUCKY reentry. And I see no chance that China will start acting like a good world citizen in this (or most any other) way.
