As I remember it (OK, it was a LOOONG time ago!) the first day of school had the least amount … if any at all … of homework assigned. It might be better to hope for rain on the first day of the second week of school.
Then, you’d gripe about having to walk/ride the bus in THAT!
When I was kid we had to walk THREE BLOCKS to the bus stop, rain or shine. :)
