Very good point. I cannot imagine that Europe was unaware that something like #45 could happen, but I do think most of them were taken off guard by it, and will be extra wary for a “political generation” to come. On the other hand, professional diplomats are not only skilled at saying pleasant sounding nothing, they’re got serious chops at remembering that NO nation is ever as good as they wish to appear, nor is any nation very likely to honor the terms of an agreement for longer than the next change of leadership.
Democracy is dependent on the will of the people, and people are quite capable of being selfish, fearful, and downright stupid. We are also capable of being pretty awesome. The only thing you can depend on is that you can’t depend on people, and that every other system of government is worse.
