How does a facemask protect one from radiation?

Btw, over here we repeatedly saw reports with images & clips of the Japanese in Tokyo wearing surgical masks while mentioning the Japanese were fearing radiation from Fukushima; but they did so because many suffer from the high pollen count from a particular tree this time of year, not because they felt a frigging surgical mask would offer any bloody protection from radiation.

^ Oldlegofool: I had asked a question, it wasn’t a statement. Edit: I suppose it looked like a rhetorical question, hmm.

I had previously replied pointing out that my btw comment was aimed at what looked to me misrepresentation by foreign journalists which always had Tokyo residents wearing surgical masks when reporting about their radiation fears, making them look like fools. However, using google the past few minutes led me to anti-radiation masks for protection against air-borne radiation particles that do look like the surgical masks Japanese often wear for pollen protection (or when affected by colds). It could be that some of those Japanese could have been wearing those. :-|

How’s the fishing? Try different bait?

^^ Another reason for wearing surgical masks is because of the 12,000 or 14,000 bodies decaying, and trying not to breathe the bacteria.

On a lighter note, I am trying to find the clip of the comedian who gave a friend some lead underwear…..
