Why the long face?
The scary part is that is how most knights got on their horses. If you think it is easy to mount a horse wearing 80 to 100 pounds of metal, you try it.
I read somewhere (that an authority for you) that not only stairs were used, but cranes. Some mighty big egos got lifted.
