because of the horrific nature of the bombings, which also left millions homeless and injured, japan was already on the brink of collapse when the war criminals who ran the u.s. war effort decided to demonstrate the newest weapons in the u.s. arsenal on the defenseless civilians who happened to live in the industrial centers of nagasaki and hiroshima. this completely unnecessary exercise was designed to demonstrate american might to the soviet union in an effort to deter it from invading japan, which it nevertheless did, something that is still a political problem today. hundreds of thousands of innocent people thus lost their lives for no reason whatsoever. and nobody was ever punished for those horrific crimes.
