Decades ago while in grad school, the guys in the chemistry department wanted to get a team together for the school’s intramural softball league. It was a co-ed league and each team had to have a minimum of three females one their team with a minimum of two playing every game. There were only 3 of us in the department and one said she would show up to cheer us on but would not play. Well, as the only team of all “21 or olders”, we always had a cooler filled with beer. We never knew the score while playing and would find out who won afterward. If we won, we went to the local saloon and celebrated, if we lost – you guessed it – we went to the same saloon and “commiserated”. We actually made it to the playoffs and came in second. Since all the students were required to take gen chem, they all hated us anyway. Our attitude towards winning and the fact that by the end of a game, most were “well-oiled” and boisterous only made tge students hate us more when we won. Yes, there was beer in the outfield.

Don’t fret Harley. You can always go grab another beer between innings.

Good thing Andy Capp doesn’t play baseball. He would hate it if that happened!
