I don’t understand why shipping companies, who are loaded with dough, can’t have armed security teams on their ships

all that US Navy and Obama does NOTHING while Somalia’s Islamic Pirates attack SMALL BOATS and hold Westerners & Americans for ransom or just kill them and keep the boats……Where is a President Thomas Jefferson-type when we need him?

I’ve read that cargo ship owners think it is “cheaper” to pay the pirates than to buy effective security to fight them.

Amazing. According to DTP, Somali pirates are Obama’s fault. Of course, according to DTP, deforestation of the Brazilian rain forest is Obama’s fault, unemployment in Japan is Obama’s fault, the bark beetle infestation in Colorado is Obama’s fault, the rise in global oil, gold and silver prices is Obama’s fault unless you’re highly leveraged in commodities, and then it’s Obama’s fault that prices are too low. Does anyone see a pattern here?

Picture Arizona. Now imagine the job of picking up every scorpion in the state. That is the problem-spacial- of stopping every “pirate” now that they’ve expanded their operating area in the Indian Ocean. “Self defense” only works if you are prepared with better “weapons” than your opponent, and that includes “passive defense”. And of course, referencing the pirates of Tripoli clearly emphasizes that Obama is totally responsible for any and all pirates being out there. BTW, the ones operating out of Indonesia and the western Pacific or Eastern Indian Ocean rarely get mentioned.

Seems amazing to me that pirates and their vessels do not, mysteriously, never come home.

Actually bluejayz, your comment was hilarious.

It’s hard to figure out how some of the pirates are successful. Just ram their craft, let the wake capsize them, something. Many of the craft trying to board the larger vessels do reflect this toon. I just don’t get it.

And it’s really sad that they don’t have security knowing they have a large risk of being attacked by pirates due to this course of travel. Look, I understand the bigger weapons thing, but most of the pirates are just using simple automatic weapons from a disadvantageous position. An equally armed security should have a major advantage. This just feels so 17th century… so weird, so stupid.

I guess the worry is that if they fight back then the pirates will become more violent and use bigger, badder arms. But by allowing them to win just makes them rich and gives them the ability to actually purchase those kind of arms which they will eventually use anyway. But at some point, you can’t just allow evil to win, even if it costs something to stop it.

Dj suggested: ”just ram their craft, let the wake capsize them, something.” Manoeuvrability. The vessels the pirates operate (even other hijacked craft) will tend to be nimbler. You try shifting down a gear on some large container ship. Takes a while.

The tanker crew should hit them with a few gallons of oil, heated to, say, 100 C.

some of you perverted my comment. I criticize Obama as Prez of the USA for doing nothing in response to a long-term ongoing problem for Americans using the open seas.

I illustrated a good Prez response that Jefferson did in the days of the Tripoli pirates…..

Of course the problems are not “caused” by an American President except to the extent that wimpy and appeasement administrations do encourage Pirates and Terrorists to go further in their attacks on innocent people.
