I may be a sucker, but I’m far more likely to give money to a panhandler with a dog or cat. All I can do is hope they’re just not using the animal to maximize pity.
I live in Portland. This can be a hard one. Yes, there are those who need it. Unfortunately, there are a few who are taking advantage of people. Once, there was a man outside the grocery store with a sign. I bought a bag of groceries for him. Nonperishable food and some fruit. He took it, sat it aside, and gave me a very unenthusiastic thanks. I used to carry around granola bars to hand out. Most people where the same way when I gave them one. Can be hard to know. I give to the people who do the Street Roots paper. It’s a newspaper that anyone down on their luck can sell. They buy copies for $.25 a piece and then can charge a $1.00 for them. They have to be vetted and wear a badge, so people know they are legit. I buy papers from people all the time. Usually give them $2.00, but sometimes more when I can afford it. A lot of people buy the papers. Some give a lot more money. I also like to give money, clothes, food, etc. to charities that support the homeless. I never judge people who give money to anyone. It’s everyone’s own personal feelings and their right. I just feel better with knowing for sure.

Wow, that’s a scathing commentary on people isn’t it?

Too true. The folks out there with their dogs do much better than those without an animal.

Animals have less of a hand (paw) in the misery that they may face….. Somewhere or other, there’s a human that figures in-
