It seems we’ve all gotten a bit complacent about how much modern medicine can do. There’s a reason that folks prior to, oh, 1950 or so set a lower value on human life than we do now: They knew that the universe could just up and kill you with little or nothing you could do about it. We may be headed back toward that again, with MRSA and all it’s cohort, as well as this latest outbreak of something deadly and new. So maybe we need also to get back to understanding the need for rapid and public response to outbreaks of “Hmm. what the heck is THAT?”
