A similar set up was envisioned in the Star Trek episode called “A Taste of Armageddon” where two planets battled solely with computers. Though people did die as dictated by the computers, it was painless and their society was largely unaffected. In the end, Capt.Kirk gave the planets a choice, real war with all the devastation and death, or talk peace.
