One of those “An insult is coming” phrases:
“Far be it from me to criticize, but…”
“No offense, but…”
“I hate to say this, but”
“I would never say anything bad about [name], but”
at least she was polite and said it to his face. he needs to talk in terms SHE would understand…not in terms from 30-40-50 yrs ago!
