“Come Sail Away” was Styx and they climbed aboard their Star ship and headed for the skies. So that doesn’t seem the reference.
If he was going for Dr. Hook, shouldn’t the song being about “Want my picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone?”

I believe this song is about catchy hooks for which Styx had plenty. This one was by Dennis DeYoung, but Dennis had darker hair. Confusing comic all around.
