George Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention. He was then elected as the first President of the United States of America. Giving another eight years of his personal time to help our young republic get on its feet, he set many precedents which were followed up to 2015. Abraham Lincoln learned, and knew the Constitution, and toiled four long bloody years, with only a little support from Seward and Welles, to preserving the Union, with the same Constitution, to give the nation “a new birth of Freedom”.Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis did their best to break it up, but did not succeed. We now have another contender, backed, most ironically, by the very party Lincoln once headed.
