The grand jury only saw a fraction of the evidence, and issued the 16 felony indictments. Stay turned. Smollett still has the FBI investigation. Look for a mail fraud charge soon.
heaven forbid that the chicago pd might actually be full of crap on this. aren’t these the folks that operated secret detention sites for years (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/feb/24/chicago-police-detain-americans-black-site). Prosecution dropped the case. Imagine if he didn’t lie — then he’s been twice victimized. Just saying folks might want to cool their jets before they continue to get high and mighty.
This near hysteria of a small-time actor fibbing to the police about a crime that didn’t happen is getting tiresome. Where is the outrage when police provide outlandish lies on their arrest reports or fatal-shooting reports. Those reports are then introduced into trials as evidence and could result in the conviction of innocent people. But no outrage about that or about “testilying” by police at criminal trials.
