My great-grandfather went on the Gold Rush. He didn’t get rich, but when he came home, he opened the California Segar Store and became quite comfortable.

On the one hand, Polk accomplished what he wanted, yet he was so exhausted that he died soon after leaving office. On the other hand, he left a big problem for Zachary Taylor, as California grew so fast, it bypassed becoming a territory and applied for statehood. Taylor, logically, thought that both California and New Mexico should come in as free states when they were ready with 60,000 people, which led to a decade of trying to solve the slavery issue. One thing we never had in Catholic school was why Polk switched from Presbyterian to Methodist before death. I would think he agreed with the Calvinistic Manifest Destiny to justify seizing the land from Mexico. Perhaps he disagreed with the Calvinistic Predestination and viewed a better afterlife?

Sincerity test – how many want Texas and the Mexican Cession returned to Mexico? How many Mexican Americans want it?
