With those short legs one wonders if a basset could catch anything. I have a Harrier (tricolor, bigger than a beagle) and she’s a lot faster than a basset (and was bred to catch hares). Of course, Fred, my coonhound, is faster still - he runs like a horse.

My Westie never catches anything, either. There are close times but they always seem to evade him. It’s the thrill of the chase.
