My dad had a toy sword made of real steel when he was a kid – I can’t imagine anyone allowing that today! But I still have it, it’s in good shape. He would have been 8 or almost 9 years old when this comic ran. Being a big fan of the daily comics, I have no doubt that he read it. And could identify fully!
