Enlightening to all would be a reading of The Fable of The Bees: or, Private Vices, Publick Benefits, by Bernard Mandeville, in 1714
The book explains many key principles of economic thought, including division of labor and the invisible hand, seventy years before Adam Smith.
Both Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes mentions Mandeville. Mandeville also describes the paradox of thrift centuries before Keynes, and may been seen as part of the school of underconsumption.
The most interesting parts are the important role of crooks and knaves in economics.
