    Of course women should be paid the same as men … the same as men who duck in and out of the job market … men who don’t take dangerous jobs … men who aren’t willing to work 60 hours a week … men who won’t travel three weeks of every month … and so forth.

    When studies of women’s pay have equated for such things, women are NOT underpaid. Further, the group paid the most is beautiful women. Sounds like discrimination to me.

    In any case, it’s none of the goverment’s business who gets paid what. Wages are just another price in a market, and the government shouldn’t be setting prices on anything. What part of FREE market don’t they understand?

    yeah, and while were at it – let’s dump that civil rights nonsense and let the free market discriminate all it wants.

    I sure didn’t think that anybody would defend this latest repub block, but sure as there are people who would vote for the alaskan barbie for president of the U.S. , there are people who think that making things fair and right should be up for a popular vote

    and the ones who decide what is fair and right are who the liberals who beleive that those who work hard should carry the leaches , the parasites , one of whom once told me I was a fool for working so hard? why the hell should I have to carry a useless, lazy, and stupid lump of human tissue. I’m the one working and he wears clothes I can’t afford

    The only thing fair is to keep it individual. You cannot legislate fairness, cause all you get is cruelty and damage the system. I don’t care if you are a man, woman, black, white, red or polka dot… your clout is in your background and your assertiveness. Why does one guy make more than another guy despite the other guy working there longer and having a better degree? Because the one guy was more assertive and a better salesman.

    There are a multitude of character studies that have been done for well over 40 years. Take a managerial certification course and maybe you’ll come across some of those studies that differentiate people’s natural skill sets and characteristics. One will also find those results tend to be rather consistent by percentage of people and percentage of men vs. women. In some places men fair better than women and vice versa.

    So don’t talk about fair. I want to hire whom I think will do the job the best… if that person can weasel more money out of me because he/she is more assertive, then more power to them… that person deserves it. Oddly enough, for those Darwin lovers out there, that is consistent with social Darwinism as well as consistent with most other worldviews.

    The supposed “fairness” is not actually fair. Example: If I were to apply at a company that does not advertise their pay and I just accept what I am offered, how can I complain when the person next to me at that job makes more because they had the confidence to haggle for more. I’m pretty sure that other person will be looked at for promossion before me to simply because they are assertive and confident and that goes a very long way.

    What “fairness” will get you is a bunch of lesser quality employees than what you could have gotten, without the ability to choose the potentially better quality employee because of “fairness,” with everyone making less than what the would have without some stupid legislation.

    If people could get their head out of their rear end and realize that by making sex and race and issue, it will be and remain an issue. Stop making it an issue and maybe, just maybe it won’t be as big of one.

    btw, I and my boss are the only men in our entire department. All the rest are women, including managers and including my bosses manager and her manager (which goes near the top of the company). They do a fantastic job. They didn’t get the job because of “fairness,” they got it because they wanted it, they sought it and they earned it… and most all the women in my position make more than me because they were more qualified on paper even though I’ve worked at the job as long as all of them combined. We all get raises in accordance to our performace and I’m catching up quickly. I would say that’s pretty fair.

    So DJ… basically you’re saying they were treated “fairly” in that they’re skill sets, drive, determination, and performance matched their work ethic. In other words, they’re being paid what their worth, not everyone across the board, whether you towed the line or not. Sounds fair to me since that’s how it should be. If you’re a superior worker you get the promotions, pay raises. You work hard, you get ahead, you catch up quickly. You’re right that does sound fair. and since that is fair, you’re definition of “fairness” is out of line with what you and many other have been writing. Promoting someone who doesn’t deserve it isn’t fair.

    If someone uses their talents be it sales or beauty to their advantage, more power to them, that’s fair. If someone is able to show confidence and talent even though they’ve been their less time than others and are able to move ahead; that’s fair.

    Picking the less qualified applicant from a list of applicants isn’t being fair, it’s bad business practice. Regardless of legislation, you can always find a qualified candidate.

    Funny how we’re using the euphemism of legislation when everyone really means “affirmative action” which was put into place originally so QUALIFIED women and minorities would get a fair shot at jobs they were originally blocked out of due to discrimination, regardless of how qualified they were; even if they were more qualified than the white male applicants they were going up against. Now THAT”S not fair. Funny how that has managed to get switched around over the years. But when you really think about it, no it’s not, it’s just sad, just like most of these posts against this strip.

    So the Republicans piss on HALF the voters and it’s a joke? They have already asked 98% of the voters to bend over so they can give tax money to millionaires while teachers, cops and firefighters are being laid off because there isn’t enough tax money, so yeah.

    This is a good cartoon. Jen Sorensen does sharp work almost all the time.

    Her work contrasts well with Pschearer’s comments, which are obtuse almost all the time, and this one is not the exception. It is so full of imbecility that one hardly knows where to begin.

    It is as if he stated that the sun goes around the earth, and his reason is that god made it that way, and he knows that that is so, because God told him so.

    Firstly: Women are no more likely to “duck in and out of the job market” than are men.

    Secondly: Dangerous jobs are not the best paid for either sex. Do coal miners make more than do judges? Does a worker in a slaughterhouse make more than does the company’s associate vice-president?

    Thirdly: Women have taken jobs that are just as dangerous as those taken by men. Recall the deaths in the chicken factory in North Carolina in the 1980s: Most of the workers were female. They died.

    Fourthly: Women are just as likely to work long hours as are men.

    There are more corrections to make, but my time is running short. Finally, it is very much the government’s business who gets paid what. Discrimination is against the law, because our society values fairness. That is part of promoting the general welfare. Please read the Constitution, Pschearer, and stop wanking into your dollar bills.

    What a stupid example to use to talk about dangerous jobs. The job wasn’t dangerous. The reason those women died is because the exit doors were locked to prevent thefts. It wasn’t due to an inherently dangerous job, it was due to the actions of management to counteract the actions of the workers. That was an OSHA issue, not a discrimination issue. You talk about psc’s imbecility, and then you make specious arguments that make you feel good when in reality they expose the type of flawed reasoning you use to arrive at your conclusions.

    Open BOTH of your eyes and see that your “progressive” politicians are no different than the conservative ones you so despise. And take a few minutes to go back through history and see how many unintended consequences have arisen due to short-sighted, poorly conceived efforts to legislate “fairness”.

    This insults the intelligence of the radical middle. How can Republicans block a measure when the Democrats have an overwhelming filibuster-proof majority.

    In effect, the Democrats blocked this measure. This is the fault of ALL the politicians currently in power. Give credit where credit is due! (And blame … )
