Joe Kennedy III gave the Democratic response to the State of the Union the other night, and out of it came when I saw as the first real messaging from the Democrats going into the 2018 midterm season. “We choose both.” It’s a nice rebuttal to the false choices that are being made that in order to be for something, we have to sacrifice something else. Mitch McConnell’s choice between CHIP or DACA is still fresh in my mind. I’m not sure how it would play out as a singular phrase, as “Yes We Can” did very well, but it’s a nice change of pace to have them believe in anything.
That said, I can’t think of a worse person to deliver that message (especially when talking about taking on the top 1%) than a Kennedy. I don’t know much about Joe Kennedy III as a singular person, and I have no reason to believe he’s not a fine, upstanding, white liberal man, but clearly the strategy was to try and invoke some Kennedy nostalgia. It’s a cheap trick. One that’s been played over and over by now and I don’t know how effective that’ll be in fighting Trump, the cheapest trick of all.
I see your point. It probably was a cheap trick and I too do not know anything about young Joe but I’m going to find out. Even Teddy, with all his flaws and sins and a 1%er, was willing to fight voraciously for the common man. Considering the evils brought down on the American people by the Republican Party and Trump I’m willing to give this young man a chance to show his metal. He has big shoes to fill but if he holds to his family’s values he may show himself to be a force for and of the people. And yes I haven’t forgotten about William but he was acquitted in trial and did good things with his life working with landmine victims.
I live in the same town as another Kennedy scion working his way up in the family business, Ted Jr.. As my State Senator, I have seen him shun any controversial local issues but boy, he manages to be there for any photo ops like ribbon- cutting, charity drives, et al. Likeable but bland, this generation doesn’t come close to the O.G.s.
this has to be one of the best strips so far, Mr. Carroll! Absolute classic. Anytime Nixon appears, it’s golden, but add “Kennedys everywhere!” and you have a classic.
