Lynn Johnston does not understand air flow (and given that she is cartoonist, I do not really expect her to). The wind is hitting Farley from a direction that shows the wind is headed straight for the house behind Farley. If the wind is not blowing the house down, the wind has to go around the house. That means where Farley is standing, he will get wind that circles above and below him, not straight at him. It’s like when you see paper blowing around if it gets near a house. I would draw a picture of it, but gocomics doesn’t do picture import any more.
Today’s strip reminded me that I wait for a strong north wind just outside my back door, so that I don’t have to go out into the yard and shake out our dog’s towels, but can do them just by sticking them out and let the wind do the work, and the dog hair is blown straight away from the house…
Plus, our dog likes to go out and sit on the stoop and let the wind blow on her face, just as if she stuck her nose out the window when we go for a ride…
Farley might have been my favourite character. He was fun to draw and he gave me subject matter that was neutral. Whenever I thought I might have run a storyline for too long, or if things were getting too serious, I’d push old Farley onto the scene for a little comic relief.
