It happened almost like the ‘toon says. There was an immediate attempt to find blame, and so much emphasis on Massey’s safety record that nobody was looking to to the miners. That’s typical. Whenever there is a disaster, the immediate reaction is to blame FEMA for not reacting fast enough rather than cooperating to help the affected.
^^ I disagree. Massey’s safety record was and is a pertinent issue. It had hundreds of safety violations, and rather than fixing them, it started years of court appeals fighting them.
John Grisham fictionalized Massey’s attempt to buy a judge to rule in his favor in the novel “The Appeal.” The issue of the judge he successfully bought went all the way to the SCOTUS and this conservative court ruled 8 to 1 against the Massey judge being able to decide on Massey’s appeal.
All that time and money spent fighting miner safety rather than improving it.
