Unfortunately, the good news masks bad news. The mining disaster resulted from privatization of the Chilean mining industry, followed by brutish suppression of unions, killing of union leaders, and a government that refused to enforce safety regulations, let alone basic law, when it conflicted with corporate profits. Basically, the same thing we’ve seen in West Virginia, only worse.
Yes, it’s great news that the miners were saved. But if the mining company had been required to followed regulations, they never would have been endangered in the first place.
