It was kind of obvious, but just in case anyone didn’t catch it who cared Luke 12;15, Christ speaking: And He said unto them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

Many churches which once had people who read and followed those instructions are now filled with (or at least have only) people who have turned them into social clubs and political party depots.

My aunt was touring some fancy cathedral somewhere and the tour guide proudly exclaimed, "No more can the church say, ‘Silver and gold have I none.’ "

    And

Someone in the group said, "Neither can it say any longer, ‘…but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.’ ” (Not that poverty guarantees the ability to do that. I don’t have any silver or gold either and sometimes I can barely walk myself.)

or if you don’t like the “-th”s

And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs.

Then he said to them, “Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because a man’s life is not measured by how many possessions he has.”

“Then Jesus said to them, “Be careful and guard against all kinds of greed. A man’s life is not measured by the many things he owns.”
