Zuma has been incredibly divisive for South Africa. On the GC forum I warned the Americans that Trump was very much like Zuma and that we had voted him in twice! I warned Americans against voting in a populist, divisive, misogynist, corrupt fool like Zuma. But did you listen…? Noooo.

Mandela’s legacy of a Rainbow nation, one which respects fellow South Africans of all races and one that respected immigrants within SA, has been shattered. Xenophobia is rampant.

The ANC has not properly addressed the poverty within SA. They have improved the lot of millions, electrified the homes of millions, provided shelter for some that were without but not on the scale that was needed nor on the scale that was possible. The difference between what was done and could have been possible is what is causing the hostility against immigrants in South Africa. It flares up periodically, backlashes against Mozambiqcans, Angolans, Zimbabweans, Malawi, refugees from Somali (the worst, 47 deaths in 2006), Nigerians, usually with a fair number of deaths among the immigrant communities.

South Africa may still have immense poverty within its borders (the enormous inequality between those who have and those who do not is so vast, I felt so uncomfortable and unsafe that I left SA for a 2nd time after a mere 4 years) but it is still the most richest nation on the continent and still attracts many migrants, most of whom remain undocumented. Unlike in Europe and North America, these migrants compete directly with the local population for low skilled or entry level jobs. Which fuels fear and suspicion. Add an incompetent and corrupt administration that excerbates the situation, plays on those fears and you get the sad legacy that the former victims of Apartheid now commit the bigotry. Where else have we seen where the victims become the new perpetrators?

Zuma promised the ANC Youth League actions against the foreigners once in power. Sound familiar? Nationalism all over again.

Last month there was an anti-immigration march in Pretoria/Tshwane, claiming they were responsible for higher levels of crime and stealing their jobs. Still familiar? It’s no wonder other African nations are disgusted with South Africa.
