Putin joined the KGB in 1975 and trained at the 401st KGB school in Okhta, Saint Petersburg. He worked in the Second Chief Directorate (counter-intelligence), before transferring to the First Chief Directorate spying on foreigners and consular officials in Saint Petersburg.
From 1985 to 1990, he spied in east Germany, using a cover identity as a translator. According to Putin’s official biography, during the fall of the Berlin Wall he burned government records and KGB files to prevent the new German government from obtaining them.
After the collapse of the Russian controlled communist east German government, Putin returned to Saint Petersburg, spying on and recruiting new KGB agents from the student body at Saint Petersburg State University….
