Vets received low enough pay while in the service. Now, big Gov wants their signing bonus back? Come on, those Vets were laying their lives on the line! Cut them some slack!
No vet should have to pay this back. It seems to have been a massive error (or massive fraud) committed by military recruiting to ensure high numbers of enlistments. It is not the fault of the vets involved or their responsibility to make it right. Put bluntly, it is exactly the kind of behavior that makes all of us (vet or not) mistrust government: “Oops. We made a mistake. Now you have to pay for it.”
I believe the woman who promised these bonuses is serving 30 months. But DOD should let these vet’s keep the money. It is better to “squander” these bonuses than buy $500 toilet seats
The California National Guard told the state’s members of Congress two years ago that the Pentagon was trying to claw back re-enlistment bonuses from thousands of soldiers, and even offered a proposal to mitigate the problem, but Congress took no action, according to a senior National Guard official.Thousands of our service members are paying the price for mistakes made by California National Guard managers, some of whom are now serving jail time or paying restitution for their crimes. It is outrageous to hold these service members and their families responsible for the illegal behavior of others.
Pant legs do not stuff in the prosthesis, but are worn outside. You could have had him in shorts, made the same point, and not have the distraction from reality.

I don’t think those who saw battle have to return the money but those that DIDN’T! That is the point.

Seems like there should be some folk going to jail for illegally offering kickbacks.
