I do need my truck for somethings. However I ride my bike alot including to work 3-4 days a week. Saves on gas which off sets maintance costs of my small fleet of bikes as well as the truck. The new one is a touring bike so with paineer bags it is a small shopping cart.

I’ve gone car-free and I’ve got to say there is little I NEED it for. When I do it’s a good time to call up my sister for a day of chat, lunch and shopping.

A year of bike repair (shockingly inexpensive after years of car repairs), a rain suit, rubber boots and a motorcycle helmet for the winter chill cost about a month’s worth of car insurance and gas, never mind a loan payment. Living nearer to my work means my commute is shorter, even including a bit of summer sweat wash-up time.

AnarresaI doubt I will ever be totally Truck free. (at least with the job I have and where I live) I am in a more rural area. I need to haul stuff from the hardware store. Dump runs as I tend to do most of my home maintain and upgrade. Then the bike events out of the area I want to go to. Also work sometimes need a short notice response time as I do not always have a set work time. There is no public transit close to my work. I live 12 miles from work. So I use the truck as a back up.Still I am experience much of the savings costs. My gasoline bill and maintance cost are much lower. I the two years I owned this truck I have 14000 on it. With the truck paid off I do not see me needed a replacement for a decade or more.I will say riding in versus driving I arrive in a better mood. I am losing weight and healthy due to riding

We’ve always bought our vehicles second or third hand. Paying them off or cash on the barrel head, made it easy to keep them. Where we live, public transportation suck and if I need to take my dogs to the vet, they aren’t allowed on board. Sometimes I need to haul stuff and if it’s second hand furniture, I save on delivery costs by hauling it myself. There are just some places where a vehicle is a necessity. Right now, the vehicles we currently have, have been easy to take care of and have been around for quite a few years and qualify for antique plates.

I use my car for work, and so losing it means losing my job. As it is, the area I live in doesn’t exactly have that many options for mass transit, and you’ve got to travel a fair ways anyway to get all that much done beyond basic survival.

Need a car to drove my legally blind hubby around. However, barring accidents, I will keep this car for MANY years. Maybe when hubby finally passes on I will find some congenial roommates and live in a nice little house, sharing expenses and company!
