I missed something here. Is there a category between Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts called Fink Scouts?

Ha! I bet he was one when he was a kid anyway, in my experience they are devious lil monsters who only do good when people are looking, and then only to the minimum requirement. Boy scouts make Calvin look like an angel.

This is their homage to the BSA’s centennial. My son is a scout, and overall it’s been a pretty good organization for him. And when I cut in an accident, my boy scout nephew knew how to patch me up.

I think Fink Scout comes right after Creep Scout, but I’ll have to consult the handbook.

What demerit badges do you have to get for Vulture Scout?

I used to be a Cub Scout and knew Boy Scouts (I decided not to go to that level). I’d hardly argue that most I knew did good only when others were looking. Some did, but they were a minority - and no more than one would expect from a group of boys who have a standard of character imposed from the outside.

Character is an “inside job”, and from all my understanding of Scouting that was its founder’s goal. Whether it presently lives up to that goal is another question, which I’m not qualified to answer.

Johanan, BSA is proudly living up to its original mandate to “build character”. As you said, boys will be boys, but within the scouting organization, energy is channeled into constructive activities. They are taught survival skills (both wilderness and civilization) which can include everything from the proper handling of an axe to proper manners. I am very proud of being a trained adult leader when my boy was a Scout.

I was in the Cub Scouts but they wouldn’t let Indians in the Boy scouts, so we formed the Indian Scouts and learned to go on scalping and horse stealing raids. Skills that helped us a lot in college when we went on panty raids.

OK, you know he’s up to something & it won’t be good for the Boy Scouts’ reputation.
