Actually it did come from the US government. The USFS (forest circus) a division of the dept. of agriculture released the number in hope of validating their existence……..
Go ahead; read through http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome and see how bloated the USDA has become and attempt to convince me that this has not become “a giant behemoth of a bueaucracy”………….
Unfortunately for the taxpayers the majority of wildfires in Arizona are human caused. Sadly during my 20 years of flying fire in Arizona a very large percentage were caused by illegal aliens walking away from the fires they started to stay warm and cook at night along the trail. Another percentage was started as diversions to occupy the Border Patrol and other agencies while the coyotes ran UDA’s and the cartel folks ran dope. You folks who have spent no time along the border and for that matter as far north as Utah and Colorado have no idea what these UDA’s are costing you
My first fire in Arizona, we spent three days in an area with hardly any fuel, with a mob of people that in my prior experience in the Sierra, we’d have only had four people on for a day. In most of the country along the border, not much fuel.
Now around Mt Lemon, or up around and above the Mogollon, different story. Along the Colorado and in drainages, there is also on occasion some “exciting” fuel loads!
Our fire crews also used to include a LOT of “immigrant” workers, and they had to have bilingual crew bosses. The worst problem was they were terrible at taking proper care of their feet. They saved (made) contractors a lot of profit by working cheaper…

Perhaps with illegal immigrants fighting the fire it would cost less and be contained sooner? Oh, right, this is Arizona.
