He must have been able to hear her car starting 1.5 miles away, and to distinguish it from several hundred other cars.

As well as having an excellent sense of smell. He also has an excellent sense of hearing.
Dogs never cease to amaze me. Especially a certain Great Dane we all know and love.

Actually, he heard it open. It takes a couple of seconds to bust through their door, run down the street and scratch on this door!
